Is There A Link Between Heart Disease And Gum Disease?

Posted on 2/21/2022 by Dr. Johnson
Is There A Link Between Heart Disease And Gum Disease?Heart disease creates a lot of problems for your body. You might think you only have to be concerned about your heart, but heart disease can also connect with gum disease and vice versa.

About Heart Disease

Heart disease kills more people in the United States than anything else. Both heart disease and high blood pressure can cause a lot of issues in your body. Heart disease can cause kidney problems and liver issues, especially if the patient has high blood pressure as well.

Gum Disease And Heart Health

Gum disease is actually an infection of your gums, and bacteria cause gum disease. Gum disease, if it is in an advanced stage, can cause your gums to shrink, which can cause you to lose your teeth. However, gum infections can damage your heart as well. Because gum disease is an infection, if you don't treat it, the infection can spread to your heart. It can damage your heart valves. If you already have heart disease, the last thing you need is an infection in your valves.

What Should I Do?

If you have heart disease, it is really important you continue to brush and floss your teeth twice a day. You need to get to the dentist twice a year for dental checkups as well. A dentist will be able to help you stay on top of your gum disease. If you have periodontitis, which is moderate to severe gum disease, you should visit the dentist or periodontist once every three months to have your gums deep cleaned. The deep gum cleaning will help to prevent the infection from spreading to your heart. Luckily, a heart-healthy diet is perfect for your teeth and gums! Healthy fruits and veggies can do wonders for your heart and dental health.
