What Are Some Ways To Correct Sleep Apnea?

Posted on 5/23/2022 by Dr. Johnson
What Are Some Ways To Correct Sleep Apnea?People with sleep apnea must find a way to correct their breathing issues in order to get a good night's rest. Rest is more important to your health than people realize. You reduce the chances of serious illnesses such as strokes and heart attacks if you get a good night's sleep. If your doctor diagnoses you with sleep apnea, there are ways you can treat it to get better sleep.

CPAP Machines

CPAP (continuous positive airway pressure) is a mask you can wear at night to regulate your breathing while you sleep. CPAP machines allow you to rest well during your sleep cycle. However, some people with sleep apnea say these machines are noisy and uncomfortable to wear at night.

Oral Sleep Apnea Devices

Many sleep apnea sufferers benefit from oral devices. These oral sleep apnea devices usually fit inside your mouth while you are sleeping. You place it in your mouth as you are going to bed, and the device helps to keep your tongue from blocking your windpipe. Your jaw also stays in the correct position for sleeping. There are several oral devices available to treat sleep apnea. A dentist can work with a sleep medicine specialist to determine which device will work best for you.

Surgical Procedures

You may be able to control your sleep apnea through a surgical procedure. Sometimes surgical procedures can be as simple as having your tonsils and adenoids removed so they don't obstruct your windpipe. You can also have a surgical procedure to reduce the tissue at the top of your windpipe as well, to make breathing easier. Other surgical options include devices that can stimulate the nerves in your tongue or your diaphragm to improve your breathing during the sleep cycle. A doctor can implant the device underneath the skin in your chest in less than an hour. You have a number of options to treat your sleep apnea.
