Oral Surgery for People with Special Needs

Posted on 5/9/2022 by Dr. Johnson
Oral Surgery for People with Special NeedsDental patients require care, compassion, and understanding. This is not limited to healthy patients only. When dealing with special needs patients, treating them with compassion goes a long way in the healing process. Special needs patients are those with geriatric issues, mobility issues, mentally disabled patients and mentally ill patients, patients with other health issues, or children with behavioral problems.

Accessibility

Patients with mobility issues might require wheelchair services. The treatment clinic must offer these to dental patients that need them. Where possible, they can also ensure the surgery is conducted downstairs to ensure as little movement as possible.

Sedation

Patients with special needs should be operated on under general anesthesia. This is so that the surgery can go as smoothly as possible, especially when considering that the surgery can cause anxiety among patients like children with behavioral issues. The weight, medical condition, and age should be considered when sedating patients.

Tips for Special Health Oral Specialists

Talk with the patient's guardians about their conditions and discover how their mental and communication capabilities hinder or affect their oral care. See what can be done to make their dental routine and health better and easier despite their conditions. Also, observe the patient and the movements which might make their oral surgery a little complicated so that you can involve the entire dental team.

Involving the Guardians

Most special needs patients will only feel comfortable in the presence of someone familiar. Most patients will feel anxious about the whole process. Involving the people, they feel close to helps them relax and feel comfortable in the dentist's office. This can enable them to relax enough for the cleaning process and the administration of anesthesia.
