How Will I Know If My Dental Implants Fail?

Posted on 11/22/2021 by Dr. Johnson
How Will I Know If My Dental Implants Fail?Dental implants have an incredibly high success rate for patients. Did you know that 90% and 95% of dental implant surgeries are successful? That percentage is far better than many surgical procedures. However, because some dental implants fail, you need to know what signs to look for to make sure you have the healthiest dental implants possible.

Signs An Implant May Be Failing

If you recently had a dental implant procedure done, be sure that you are following your dental practitioner's instructions. First, eat a healthy soft diet while your implant is healing, and make sure that you are brushing and flossing daily. Make sure that you aren't eating overly sticky or sweet foods. Rinse your mouth out with a saltwater solution or with antibacterial mouthwash as well. While you're taking the best care of your mouth possible, you'll also want to watch out for some indications your implant may be failing.

Intense, severe pain

Like other surgical complications, one of the earliest indicators that there may be a problem with your implant is severe pain around your implant. This is especially true if your implant was not previously painful.

Receding gums

If your implant is failing, the gum around the implant will begin to recede. Your gums may even recede to the point where you can see the metal screws that your implanted tooth is attached to. If you notice the gum around the implant is receding, you need to get back to the dentist. You might also notice that the implant is shifting or moving when you chew food or even smile. This is another sign something may be wrong with your implant.

Swollen gums

Most people notice when their gums are swollen and painful. If you notice the gumline around your implant is swollen, discolored, and painful, you may have a problem with your implant. No matter what the symptoms you are experiencing are, if you are concerned about your new implant, make an appointment to see the dentist or oral surgeon.
