Signs of Impacted Wisdom Teeth

Posted on 9/5/2022 by Dr. Johnson
Signs of Impacted Wisdom TeethImpacted wisdom is the last molars situated at the back part of your mouth. These teeth don't have enough space to develop normally and emerge. As such, they remain stuck on the jaw or the gums. Most dentists recommend extracting wisdom teeth before they cause any dental problems. However, extraction is not required if the teeth erupt correctly or don't cause any pain. Here are some of the signs of impacted wisdom teeth:

Red or Swollen Gums

When the wisdom fails to emerge and erupt on the gums, they remain underneath the gums, causing red or swollen gums. Such teeth must be extracted as they can lead to infections and encourage food debris and bacteria build-up.

Jaw Pain

Another common sign of impacted wisdom teeth is pain in the jaw. The teeth fail to grow normally and either fail to completely or partially emerge. Such teeth will cause pain when chewing food. Your dentists will recommend their extraction to ease the pain.

Crowding of Teeth

The teeth can, in some circumstances, develop in abnormal angles leading to the pushing of the surrounding teeth. Growing at an unnatural angle will cause teeth crowding, leading to problems when brushing and flossing your health. If you can't maintain adequate oral hygiene, food particles, and bacteria will build up in your mouth, leading to tooth cavities and decay.

Infection and Cyst Formation

Impacted wisdom teeth are also breeding grounds for bacteria which can lead to infections. The abnormally growing teeth can also lead to cyst formation, which affects the surrounding teeth and gum tissues. When there is an infection on your teeth, you can note an unpleasant smell and taste in the mouth. You can also have problems when opening your mouth. A dentist will perform X-rays to check the wisdom teeth' nature and whether removal can offer relief to the symptoms.
