What Happens In A Tooth Extraction?

Posted on 6/6/2022 by Dr. Johnson
What Happens In A Tooth Extraction?Tooth extraction is a very common procedure. Dentists regularly need to perform tooth extractions due to disease, trauma, or to make space in the jaw for permanent teeth. Although you may have friends or relatives who have had a tooth extraction, you may have questions about a tooth extraction procedure. Here is what happens during a tooth extraction.

Tooth Anatomy

Each tooth is connected to your jawbone through the tooth roots. These roots supply blood to your tooth and keep it nourished and healthy. The pulp in the center of your tooth is soft, while the outer portion of the tooth is hard and made of calcium enamel. When you are a child and you begin to lose baby teeth, it is because the tooth roots dissolve, which loosens the tooth in the socket so that it will eventually fall out.

The Tooth Extraction Procedure

First, the dentist will numb the area around your tooth to make sure you don't feel any pain during the tooth extraction. You might feel pressure as the dentist removes your tooth, but you shouldn't feel pain. The dentist will use a tool to loosen the tooth roots and remove the tooth. Usually, you will need a few stitches, which will dissolve after the area heals. The dentist also will put gauze in the socket, which you should leave in for a few hours to ensure healing.

What Happens Afterward?

If you have been in pain due to a diseased tooth, the tooth extraction will probably be less painful than your tooth was. Be sure and take it easy until the numbness wears off. Give your tooth socket a chance to heal by chewing with your other teeth. If the tooth you had removed is in a prominent place near the front of your mouth, you may want to think about having a dental implant after the site heals to replace the tooth. If you had a tooth removed to create space in your mouth, you are ready for the next step in your dental journey.
