What To Know About Implantation Failure

Posted on 11/7/2022 by Dr. Johnson
What To Know About Implantation FailureEven though oral surgeons and dentists try their best, there are some cases of dental implantation failure. This occurs when the dental implant in a patient does not do what it is intended to do. Dental implants usually replace a natural tooth that was lost due to trauma or disease. If you are concerned about implantation failure, here are some reasons implants fail. Some of the reasons dental implants fail are out of your control, such as a poorly fitted implant. However, this information can help you work to make sure you have a successful implantation process.

Why Do Implants Fail?

Dental implants can fail for several reasons. Below we go into more detail on how they might fail.

Poor Fit

One of the reasons implants can fail is due to a poor fit, either with your natural teeth or between your gum tissue and your metal implant. Usually, dentists can ensure a good fit by taking precise measurements and excellent models of your tooth. With great measurements, the chances you will have an implementation failure are reduced greatly.

Tobacco Use

It is essential that if you use nicotine (smoking, vaping, or chewing tobacco products), you need to stop. Tobacco turns your white teeth yellow or brown. It also reduces blood flow to the area, which means your gums will not heal properly after surgery. If you need help quitting nicotine, get information on quitting from your general practitioner, dental practitioner, or your internist.

Infections

Peri-implantitis is the most common reason dental implants fail. Peri-implantitis is a condition that is caused by an infection in the area around the implant. If you are concerned about an infection around your implant, be sure that you follow your oral surgeon's aftercare instructions carefully. Also, be sure and rinse the implant area with saltwater or antibacterial mouthwash after each meal. If you are careful with your new implant, it will last you for years.
