Oral Cancer Treatments

Oral cancers have degrees of seriousness. For each degree of severity, there are treatments for oral cancer. Remember, the earlier your doctor or dentist catches oral cancer, the more quickly you can get treatment. Here are some examples of treatments for oral cancer.

If Your Cancer Is at Stage 0

If you are at Stage One of oral cancer, you may have cancerous cells on the surface of your mouth, such as the tongue, cheeks, or gums. An oral surgeon will remove the top layer of tissue from the area. That may be all of the treatment you need. Stage One patients have an excellent chance of survival.

If You Have Stage I or II Oral Cancer

If you are in the early stages of oral cancer, you'll usually have a combination of cancer treatments such as surgery, radiation, and chemotherapy. Your doctor will have a discussion with you about reconstructive surgery if you need it since they will remove more tissue to ensure they get all of the cancer cells.

If You Have Stage III or IV Oral Cancer

If you have Stage III or IV of oral cancer, you will need a combination of surgery, radiation, and chemotherapy. These combinations help to stop the spread of cancer. The surgery in the later stages of cancer may need to remove surrounding tissue and lymph nodes as well. Your doctor will talk to you about the need for reconstructive surgery or restorative dentistry.

Prevention

Oral cancer is extremely treatable if you catch it early. If you use tobacco or alcohol, or you have HPV, you need to let the dentist know. You are at a higher risk for oral cancer. That way, a dentist can check your mouth at each dental visit, and they can run additional tests if necessary. Dentists can use dyes, lights, and cameras to check your mouth twice a year. You'll be able to rest easier with a simple cancer screening your dentist performs.
