What To Avoid When Recovering From Oral Surgery

Patient recovering at home in bed after surgery at Brookfield Oral SurgeryNow that you have just had your jaw reconstruction or wisdom teeth extraction, you still have a responsibility for a great recovery experience. Recovering from oral surgery can be challenging particularly if it is a major operation. Just like you would want to rest, eat soft foods, and take your medications as you have been directed, there are a couple of things you also want to avoid. The last thing you want to encounter is complications after surgery. However, with these simple tips, you will be on a smooth road to recovery. Avoid these things if possible.

Smoking

Nicotine products, including smoking tobacco tend to restrict blood flow. As such, they slow down your healing process. Apart from that, smoking can result in long-term adverse effects like increased dangers of lung cancer and mouth cancer. Quit it if you can, it's best for your overall health, not just oral health.

Drinking Alcohol

Certain medications can interact with alcohol, bringing more problems during recovery. Alcohol thins your blood and weakens blood clots. It also delays healing. Therefore, break away from alcohol use for about 48 hours or more. When you eventually start consuming it, do it in moderation. Doing this will help support and promote healing.

Eating Spicy, Hot, or Acidic Foods

Things like spicy meals, acidic candies, and hot foods will only serve to irritate the sensitive gum tissues. As such, they delay recovery. Again, consuming sticky or hard foods can allow the debris to cling or lodge on teeth. This way, it makes it a tall order to maintain a clean surgical site.

When you follow your post-op instructions properly, you will recover within the projected timeline. In case you have complications developing, get to the dentist immediately.
