What is a full mouth reconstruction?

A full mouth reconstruction is not a single thing, but instead a whole bunch of different treatments that all work together like an orchestra playing a symphony, with our expert oral surgeon as the conductor. Since every reconstruction is as unique as you are it’s impossible to list all the potential treatments, but many patients will receive crowns, bonding, fillings, dental bridges, dentures, and veneers. It is not uncommon for unhealthy teeth to be extracted. For patients with more severe problems, bone grafting or oral surgery might be called for.

It is important to note the difference between the many treatments of a full mouth reconstruction, and the many treatments of a smile makeover, another term you may have heard of. Both full mouth reconstructions and smile makeovers may include some of the same treatments, such as bonding, but they differ in their goals. A smile makeover is focused on the aesthetics of your smile. A full mouth reconstruction will likely also improve your smile, especially if your teeth are diseased or decaying, but is more about giving you a complete oral health upgrade.

Can a full mouth reconstruction benefit you?

Most patients do not need a full mouth reconstruction, and instead would benefit from fewer and less invasive treatments. For those patients who do need a full reconstruction, though, it can literally be lifesaving. That is why you should seriously consider a full mouth reconstruction if you are dealing with damaged and fractured teeth, advanced decay or disease, more than one missing tooth, or serious congenital disorders.

What to expect when getting a full mouth reconstruction

Since there is no such thing as a “standard” full mouth reconstruction, it is impossible to tell you exactly what to expect. A reconstruction is never a rapid affair – it can take months or even years to complete the process from start to finish. A lot of the time will be spent recovering from treatments, such as allowing time for bone grafts to grow or dental implants to fuse with your jawbone. By carefully planning out a reconstruction beforehand, we can minimize the overall duration by arranging recovery periods to overlap with the time necessary to fabricate dental appliances like crowns and dentures.
